Each disciplinary department of IU’s Eskenazi School of Art, Architecture + Design brings in a visiting artist each year to run workshops with students, visit classes, and present as part of their speaker series.

In the 2024-2025 academic year, the Graphic Design Department brought Celene Aubry, Director & Print Shop Manager at Hatch Show Print. Audry visited IU with Printer & Intership Program Manager Michaela Tures to represent Hatch Show Print, the iconic letterpress printing shop and living museum in Nashville, TN.

I created a letterpress printed poster to advertise for her presentation at the end of her visit. Posters were free for attendees to take, and some traveled back with Celene and Michaela to the shop!

PROJECT 2025 McKinney Visiting Artist Series

DURATION JAN - FEB 2025

I designed the poster by laying out type at different fonts, sizes, and weights, on a piece of paper to “sketch” different possible layouts. Ultimately, I hand drew the script font and digitized it with a rope brush, reminiscent of old country music posters from Hatch, to spell Celene Aubry’s name.

The type for her name was separated out into an orange and brown layer, for the splash color and details of the rope text. This design was laser engraved on acrylic and mounted to type high on MDF board. I could then lock up the image with the wood and metal text.

The poster was printed in three layers - orange, brown, and transparent blue - on 100lb French White Kraft Tone paper

Featuring HWT Konop 16 line and HWT Ornaments in transparent blue.
